Lio Piccolo, laguna di Venezia

Italy
Cavallino Treporti (VE)

One of the most impressive environments you can find in the Venice lagoon: a very important place that in the low vegetation typical of salt marshes conceals a rich and interesting fauna.

For nature lovers, the northern Venice lagoon, salt marshes and fishing valleys are fascinating destinations to observe undisturbed lagoon flora and fauna. Lio Piccolo is one of the most impressive environments you can find in the Venice lagoon: a very important place that in the low vegetation typical of salt marshes conceals a rich and interesting fauna. But this is also an extremely important natural environment encompassing a long golden beach, dunes, pine forest, gardens, and the fascinating lagoon landscape with canals, salt marshes, mud flats, and fishing valleys. This timeless area of natural beauty is an exceptional site to explore while riding a bicycle.

Società Agreste srl, owner of the land, has been safeguarding and preserving the typical and peculiar characteristics of the Lio Piccolo area since 1965 by performing the routine and non-routine maintenance works needed to protect the specific nature of the valley ecosystem and of its biodiversity. But over the past 20 years, major climate fluctuations, rising average temperatures, numerous storm surges and adverse weather conditions have caused the deterioration and erosion of vegetated banks, inner embankments, canals and shores. For this reason, in addition to restoring the embankments, our reforestation project includes planting new trees typical of the North Venice lagoon environment and in particular: tamarisk, holm oak and juniper. Planting these trees, in addition to reinforcing the embankments to prevent shoreline destruction by the tides, will significantly increase phytodepuration of water.

This intervention will also provide shelter for wildlife thus allowing reproduction and hence repopulation, and will also enable the growth of algae useful for absorbing C02.

Adopt a tree and come with us to plant it! See you on April 15 at 10.30am.
