launched an agroforestry project. Among vines, hedgerows and old paths, we are combining traditional and modern techniques. Seven months later, <b>we check on<\/b>&nbsp;the growth of<b> the trees adopted by companies and citizens<\/b>. As the video shows, the plants are in excellent health and passed the summer season brilliantly, thanks also to the abundant rainfall. In autumn, the plants are entering vegetative rest, the autumn-winter dormancy season, during which the leaves turn yellow and then fall, to recover in spring. This technique involves the <strong>planting of the vine next to a taller tree<\/strong> that acts as a natural <strong>support<\/strong> for its growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"1236\">Unlike modern vineyards supported by artificial poles, here the vine climbs native tree species, such as blackthorn, creating a plant \u201cmarriage\u201d that enhances the interaction between plants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1cf9605 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1cf9605\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>History of the vite maritata or piantata padana<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few decades ago vineyards as we know them today did not exist: the vine was part of a \u201cheterogeneous system\u201d in which grapes were not the only fruit grown and harvested. Known in history as the \u201cpiantata padana\u201d, this system consisted of placing, at the edges of land used for growing cereals, vines that were \u201cmarried\u201d to trees such as elm, field maple, willow, poplar and mulberry, but also to some fruit trees, such as cherry or pear. The piantata padana has practically disappeared from the landscapes of the Po Valley, but this system has a very ancient history.<\/p>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"48\">&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>ethnographic museum of Stanghella<\/strong>&nbsp;holds a&nbsp;<strong>document of inestimable value<\/strong> that tells the story of the Bassa Padovana: the \u201c<em>Map of the Retratto del Gorzon<\/em>\u201d. It is an imposing<strong> cadastral map<\/strong>&nbsp;made in the sixteenth century on behalf of the&nbsp;<strong>Serenissima Republic of Venice,&nbsp;<\/strong>still perfectly preserved, which \u201cphotographs\u201d the territory from Montagnana to Anguillara Veneta before the Venetian land reclamation of the 1500s and&nbsp;<strong>describes in detail the various crops<\/strong>, the vast lakes, the marshes and the villages that were part of the Po Valley territory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The great \u201cGorzon Map\u201d, despite its four hundred years of age,&nbsp;<strong>accurately represents the hydrography and land use of that time<\/strong>; when it was not covered by water, the land was&nbsp;<strong>mostly devoted to viticulture,<\/strong>&nbsp;covering almost 30% of the entire territory then available, that is, almost four times the land devoted to cereal crops. Consider this:&nbsp;<strong>today<\/strong>, in the same area covered by the map,&nbsp;<strong>the surface devoted to viticulture represents only 0.81%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the origins of the vite maritata date back more than&nbsp;<strong>3,000 years<\/strong>, to the time of the&nbsp;<strong>Etruscans<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>who cultivated vines as they saw them growing spontaneously in the woods<\/strong>. The vine is a climbing shrub, a kind of \u201cliana\u201d, and in a forest,&nbsp;<strong>its natural environment at our latitudes<\/strong>, it tends to climb a tree to reach as much light as possible. It is not, however, a parasitic species: the vine does not interfere with the tree it clings to. We find&nbsp;<strong>evidence of the piantata padana in later periods too<\/strong>: from the Roman Empire, through the Middle Ages and up to the present day. Evidence that we find in numerous artworks and paintings of every era and of various artistic movements.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-359e0c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"359e0c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vite-maritata-realismo.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6174\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vite-maritata-realismo.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vite-maritata-realismo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vite-maritata-realismo-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/vite-maritata-realismo-600x399.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52b648b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52b648b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"48\"><strong>Trees \u201cmarried\u201d to the vine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 9\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The trees most commonly \u201cmarried\u201d to vines could belong to the&nbsp;<strong>sweet species<\/strong>, as well as to those known as&nbsp;<strong>strong<\/strong>. The first group included fast-growing plants suited to cool soils, such as the&nbsp;<em>salg\u00e0ro<\/em>&nbsp;(white willow) and&nbsp;<em>\u00e0lbare and p\u00f2golo<\/em>&nbsp;(poplars). The&nbsp;<strong>willow<\/strong>, if on the one hand it developed few roots, on the other it tended to form a rather broad crown, which nevertheless had to be contained by pollarding; moreover,&nbsp;<strong>it was believed to give the grapes an unpleasant taste as well<\/strong>, called \u201c<em>da salgar\u00ecn\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The strong species included the elm<\/strong>,&nbsp;<em>the \u00f2pio (field maple)<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>the orno or alt\u00e0n<\/em>&nbsp;(manna ash). A group apart was formed by&nbsp;<em>the mor\u00e0ro or mor\u00e8r<\/em>&nbsp;(<strong>mulberry<\/strong>), especially the white one, and the&nbsp;<em>nog\u00e0ra or nogh\u00e8ra<\/em>&nbsp;(<strong>walnut<\/strong>), as these are fruit trees.&nbsp;<strong>As possible \u201chusbands\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;there were also, albeit rarely on the plain, unlike the hills where they were frequent,&nbsp;<strong>other fruit trees<\/strong>, such as&nbsp;<em>the amol\u00e0ro<\/em>&nbsp;(<strong>domestic plum<\/strong>), the&nbsp;<em>sarez\u00e0ra<\/em>&nbsp;(<strong>sweet cherry<\/strong>) and&nbsp;<em>marinel\u00e0ra<\/em>&nbsp;(<strong>sour cherry<\/strong>) and a few others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"48\">&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"48\"><strong>The arrival of \u201cmodern\u201d agriculture and the disappearance of the vite maritata: deforestation and land reclamation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The works of&nbsp;<strong>deforestation and land reclamation<\/strong>&nbsp;carried out from the twelfth century onwards slowly caused&nbsp;<strong>the almost complete disappearance of the vite maritata system<\/strong>&nbsp;, which nevertheless remained in use until recent times. Some blamed&nbsp;<strong>Dutch elm disease<\/strong>&nbsp;for the disappearance of the \u201cpiantata\u201d; in reality,&nbsp;<strong>the introduction of ever more modern agricultural machinery is the real reason for the decline of this crop<\/strong>. The need to work the land with ever larger and more powerful machines led to&nbsp;<strong>the removal of the \u201cobstacles\u201d constituted by the trees married to the vine<\/strong>, while the increasingly widespread use of artificial feed made the production of leaves and grasses, once essential for raising animals, pointless. Agricultural machinery and tractors thus began to change our landscape, which underwent a radical transformation;<strong>&nbsp;in the Bassa Padovana it is still possible to come across a few examples of \u201cpiantata padana\u201d:&nbsp;<\/strong>a few remnants that should be considered on a par with a work of art, a monument to that peasant craftsmanship that knew how to use rational systems for land use and crops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-25 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1e3daeef\" data-id=\"1e3daeef\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div
