class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\tAs announced by the European Green Deal, the European Union has recently adopted the new EU Forest Strategy to 2030: planting 3 billion additional trees by 2030, with the aim of improving the quantity and quality of our forests, mitigating the effects of climate change and counteracting the loss of biodiversity. The\u00a0<strong>European Commission<\/strong>\u00a0will facilitate,\u00a0<strong>encourage and monitor the process<\/strong>\u00a0by counting the trees planted:\u00a0<strong>all European citizens will be able to follow and keep track of tree planting<\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forest.eea.europa.eu\/3-billion-trees\/introduction\">this web platform<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and an interactive online map with an integrated counter \u2013 called \u201cMap-My-Tree\u201d \u2013 developed by the European Commission together with the European Environment Agency.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"48\"><strong>Some basic principles to follow when planting trees<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong>\u201cPlant and grow the right tree, in the right place,\u00a0and for the right purpose\u201d<\/strong>: the European Union has been very clear on the criteria to be adopted for the planting of new trees and\u00a0<strong>this will require long-term planning and monitoring<\/strong>.<br \/>This requires long term\u00a0planning and monitoring. In practice, this means\u00a0<strong>planting the right mix of tree species not only in\u00a0forests, but also in agroforestry, agricultural and\u00a0urban areas<\/strong>. No trees should be planted in areas\u00a0of high nature value such as mires, bogs, fens,\u00a0wetlands, peatlands, and grasslands. The Commission will facilitate, motivate, count and\u00a0monitor the process: it will provide political and\u00a0technical support, communication and labelling.<\/p><p><strong>A very important detail that we want to share with you is this: the planting of new trees should not be an alternative to the preservation of existing trees and forests, which remains the top priority, but an additional effort to increase tree coverage within the European Union.
