San Lio Forest is located in Carlentini, in the province of Syracuse, on a hill that was once covered with almond orchards, now abandoned. This area, severely impacted by the climate crisis with prolonged droughts and increasingly hot summer temperatures, is where WOWnature is planting a new forest by selecting native tree and shrub species that can boost biodiversity and provide habitats for many animal and plant species.<\/span><\/p>\n

To combat water scarcity, each plant is equipped with a Waterbox: an innovative reservoir that gradually releases 20-25 litres of water, ensuring supplies even during the driest months. This system significantly improves the survival rate of young plants and reduces overall water consumption. Summer wildfires are among the main threats in this area. To prevent them naturally and effectively, an agreement has been made with a local farmer: during summer, cows graze in designated areas, feeding on herbaceous vegetation that, if left unchecked, could fuel wildfires.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a practical example of synergy and proactive prevention. In addition to controlled grazing, firebreak zones and annual mowing are planned to slow or halt any wildfires. But the project extends beyond reforestation. It also aims to create spaces for community gatherings, including nature trails, family-friendly paths, an area for farm camping with restrooms, and educational activities like forest kindergartens and after-school programmes.<\/span><\/p>\n
