Sappada - Plodn

In October 2018, this forest was almost completely destroyed by Vaia Storm: the wind, relentless, left behind only destruction: it must have been impossible not to feel fragile, small and at the mercy of events during that cursed night. No one in the affected areas will ever forget Vaia Storm.

Thanks to the intervention supported by MAW and Crédit Agricole FriulAdria, the area has been cleaned up and made safe, removing the felled trees and planting, on an area of 3 hectares, 2,500 new trees, so that the forest can thrive again and protect the road below.
The reforestation intervention was carried out on a forest area with an important landscape and hydro-geological protection function located in the village of Lerpa, at the entrance of the town of Sappada (UD), a mountain resort located at the eastern end of the Dolomites on the border between Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Austria.

In order to increase the forest’s ability to withstand extreme events, young trees of different species that are well adapted to local conditions have been planted: spruce, fir, larch, beech, maple. These trees, as they grow, will form the perfect habitat for the many animals that inhabit the surroundings; trees that, being right at the gates of the village of Sappada, will play an important role in improving the existing landscape.
