Forests created or improved Bosco del Lusignolo
Why did we support this forest?
Between Brescia and Cremona, a former agricultural field has become a green lung for the Po Valley.
History of the forest
The Lusignolo Forest extends along the banks of the eponymous canal, between the municipalities of San Gervasio Bresciano, Milzano, and Alfianello, in the heart of the Po Valley. Established in the early 2000s thanks to the initiative of the Lombardy Region as part of the program “Ten Great Plains and Valley Forests,” the forest today represents a rare green lung in an intensive agricultural context, poor in natural habitats.
Created by the Municipality of San Gervasio Bresciano, the forest has quickly become an important reference point for local biodiversity, hosting a diverse array of plant and animal species.

How we improved the forest
With WOWnature, we helped improve the safety and revitalisation of the Lusignolo Forest, breathing new life into an area that is growing, transforming, and welcoming more visitors. One of the primary objectives of the project was to ensure visitor safety by removing unstable clone poplars along the canal and replacing them with native species that are more resilient and better suited to the environment. Additionally, dead or damaged branches and trees were removed to encourage the growth of the young forest into a more stable and resilient ecosystem. To complete the effort, we planted 200 new trees and shrubs—including willows, hornbeams, dogwoods, black poplars, oaks, elms, elderberries, and viburnums—to boost biodiversity and enhance the area’s ecological balance. Thanks to these efforts, the Lusignolo Forest will continue to be a safe, lively, and beautiful place, accessible to everyone and increasingly valuable to the surrounding community.
