Dear audience,

I am happy and honored by your presence at Stresa Festival 2024!

Stresa Festival will be dedicated to the memory of Claudio Abbado, ten years after his passing. Claudio, a true visionary, a rare Maestro always running ahead toward the future, charted many paths and left just as many open for the music yet to come. Abbado always reconciled the figure of the artist with that of a socially engaged man, and one of the paths he pointed to, which Stresa Festival wishes to follow, leads into the world of nature, respect for the planet, and the conviction that music too can and must do its part.

Twenty-five years ago, ahead of his time, Abbado asked, as a condition for his return to conduct at La Scala, that 90,000 trees be planted in Milan. This is now an extremely current topic; in 2019 a study published in Science showed that “planting a trillion trees” would, at least in part, resolve the climate crisis, and given that over the last two centuries humanity has cut down two trillion trees, replanting one billion of them shouldn’t be so complicated.

Stresa Festival has chosen to follow Abbado’s vision and is committed to growing a new forest dedicated to the Maestro within Parco Campo dei Fiori, on the other side of Lake Maggiore.

I wanted to share this initiative with you because I would love for the whole Festival – organization, audience, artists, all together – to use the amplifying power of music to give new voice and meaning to Claudio Abbado’s message.

Restoring the forest

In recent years, extreme weather events, combined with a fire that broke out in 2017, have damaged this centuries-old forest. Faced with situations like this, WOWnature is ready to step in: the project aims to restore the forest heritage and improve its habitats, such as the nutrient-poor grasslands and the ancient fruit chestnut groves.
