Forests created or improved Kitshanga

Congo

Why did we support this forest?

A 18-hectare reforestation project in the remote province of Nord Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

History of the forest

In the Kitshanga area of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, pressure on natural resources had compromised the environmental balance. In a mountainous region where agriculture is complex and grazing widespread, the lack of sustainable management threatened to accelerate the degradation of local ecosystems. The project was created to respond to this urgent need and contribute to the protection of biodiversity and the fight against the climate crisis.

Where is the forest located?

How we improved the forest

Native tree species and thorny bushes were planted on 18 hectares of land to regenerate the soil, promote biodiversity, and limit uncontrolled access by livestock. The reforestation involved 12 hectares of sloping land, unused for agricultural purposes, where progressive renaturalisation can now be observed. The project has contributed to CO₂ sequestration in the short term and, thanks to future thinning operations, will ensure a sustainable supply of wood and timber for local communities.
