Forests created or improved Pizzotto Forest

Italia

Why did we support this forest?

The project plans to increase the biodiversity of the forest by introducing local species to prepare the forest for any upcoming extreme weather events.

History of the forest

Nestled among the pastures of the Vezzena Plateau, Bosco Pizzotto is one of the most captivating spots in Trentino. Just a short walk from the trail that leads to Forte Vezzena, a scenic lookout and historic symbol of World War I, this forest provides hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers a place where stunning landscapes and history intertwine.

However, Bosco Pizzotto is not only a reminder of past events: in 2018, it was struck by Storm Vaia, which downed hundreds of trees, mostly spruce, with fierce gusts of wind. The images of the forest after the storm left a lasting impression. From that point on, a new chapter of regeneration and hope began.

How we improved the forest

After Vaia, Bosco Pizzotto exposed the weaknesses of a forest structure that was not very resilient: an almost exclusive dominance of spruce and a lack of species diversity. This prompted the creation of a forest improvement project aimed at making the forest stronger and better prepared to handle increasingly frequent extreme events. Thanks to the support of those who adopted a tree, we began to enhance the forest’s biodiversity by introducing more resistant native species, such as larch, beech, maple, rowan, and birch trees. This mix of conifers and broadleaf trees will make the forest more stable, diverse, and better equipped to respond to the ongoing climate crisis. In 2021, another challenge tested the forest: the spread of the bark beetle, a pest that attacks weakened spruce trees. Once again, planting new trees was a concrete response to control the emergency and promote a new ecological balance. The Pizzotto Forest is being reborn, with new, deeper, and more diverse roots. A healthier, more beautiful forest that is better prepared for the future.
