Forests created or improved Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino
Why did we support this forest?
The forests of the Ticino Park are the last and most important forest area in the Po Valley. The wooded areas cover a total of about 20,000 hectares and, in terms of continuity and extension, represent territorial excellence. This heritage, however, is in certain areas degraded by the presence of exotic pest plants, which have spread due to the transformations on the territory caused by socio-economic changes. It is therefore planned to eliminate the exotic species, favoring the growth those typical of the ecological and climatic context

History of the forest
The Lombardy Ticino Valley Park is Italy’s first regional park and Europe’s first river park. In a highly urbanised and intensively agricultural setting, it serves as a vital ecological corridor between the Alps and the Apennines, thanks to a diverse landscape of forests, wetlands, and farmland. Today, however, these ecosystems face increasing threats: the spread of invasive species, the simplification of rural landscapes, and habitat fragmentation are reducing biodiversity and jeopardising the health of the territory.
Where is the forest located?

How we improved the forest
The project involved multiple municipalities within the Ticino Park, implementing measures to combat invasive alien species in lowland forests and encourage the natural regeneration of native species such as English oak, common ash, and black alder. To strengthen ecological links between habitats, we have planted new hedges, tree lines, and shrubs. Additionally, we have created microhabitats vital for wildlife, including habitat trees, log pyramids, hibernacula (winter shelters), and basin basins to preserve moisture. These actions are aimed at boosting biodiversity by supporting woodpeckers, nocturnal birds of prey, and numerous insects.
This project is co-funded by the Lombardy Region’s Biodiversity and Climate Call (BioClima) and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima is an initiative created within the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project that aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
