Forests created or improved Oglio Nord Park

Italia

Why did we support this forest?

The condition this Park has been compromised by severe weather events and the entry of alien and pest species, which have altered its natural form. Therefore, we will carry out forest improvement works, promoting native species through the planting of 10,000 new trees.

History of the forest

North Oglio Park runs along the homonymous river, from Lake Iseo to the Mella River, its affluent. Although the area is altered by land reclamation and intensive agriculture, we can still find natural environments of great ecological value, including as many as eight Natura 2000 sites, which include willow groves and wetlands, vital to the animals that inhabit them. In fact, the park is popular with bird-watchers. It is home to many riverine birds, such as the cormorant, grey heron, mallard, crane, and night heron. Additionally, sports enthusiasts can find their place here, biking along the Oglio River Cycle Route, a popular route throughout Europe that connects to cycle routes to various destinations. This Park is a true green jewel for the Lombardy area, so it should be preserved and kept in excellent condition. In recent years, we have acknowledged the need for intervention to protect the biodiversity and health status of the park.

The woods of the Oglio Nord Park are in danger: the spread of invasive exotic species, the presence of old and weakened trees, the degradation of the banks and the progressive silting up of the oxbow lakes threaten the quality of the habitats and the proper ecological functioning of the area.
Supporting this project means contributing to the recovery and improvement of the forests and wetlands of the Oglio Nord Park, thus ensuring a future for biodiversity and the health of river ecosystems.

How we improved the forest

The project involved enhancing the Bosco della Marisca Nature Reserve, situated between the municipalities of Genivolta (CR) and Villachiara (BS), along the right bank of the Oglio River. First, we improved the existing forest by removing invasive plants and promoting native species through targeted thinning and new planting.

Next, we expanded the wooded area by one hectare, planting young local trees protected by shelters and providing ongoing care in the early years. Finally, to boost biodiversity, we restored some oxbow lakes, created shelters for reptiles and amphibians, and installed wild bee houses and bat nesting boxes. This project aims to strengthen the natural balance and increase the resilience and richness of life in Oglio Nord Park.

This project is co-funded by the Lombardy Region’s Biodiversity and Climate Call (BioClima) and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. Bioclima is an initiative created within the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project that aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
