Forests created or improved Boschi del Campo dei Fiori
Why did we support this forest?
The Campo dei Fiori Regional Park is a protected natural area located in the province of Varese, in Lombardy. It is of great value for its biodiversity and the number of species found there, and, following extreme weather events, requires forest restoration and improvement work.
History of the forest
Campo dei Fiori Park, historically known as ‘the mountain of the people of Varese’, is one of the most popular and beloved destinations in the area, thanks to its proximity to the city and the beauty of its mountainous landscapes. Its geographical location and geological features have fostered the growth of a diverse range of vegetation, including chestnut and beech woods, rock-dwelling flora and peat bogs, which are home to numerous animals. The park’s woods are home to dozens of species, including red deer, roe deer, red foxes, stone martens, dormice and polecats. There is also no shortage of birds of prey, such as the honey buzzard, buzzard, sparrowhawk and peregrine falcon.

How we improved the forest
Over the past five years, the forests of the Campo dei Fiori massif have been hit by a series of severe disasters: wildfires, the powerful storm ‘Alex’ in 2020, torrential rain and the resulting landslides, which have damaged large areas of woodland.
In some areas, over 90% of the trees have been felled – that is, uprooted or snapped by the storm – rendering the forest unable to provide its benefits, including protection for the villages at the foot of the mountain range. The project aims to restore the parts of the forest damaged by the storm and to improve certain habitats that are vital for biodiversity.
This project is co-funded by the Lombardy Region’s “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) call for proposals and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. BioClima is an initiative launched as part of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project, which aims to create public-private financing models to catalyse investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
