Three billion trees by 2030: European Green Deal to plant trees and protect forests and biodiversity

The European Union has launched an ambitious initiative: to plant three billion trees by 2030. This goal, included in the Biodiversity Strategy, is one of the most concrete actions of the European Green Deal to combat the climate crisis and environmental degradation. The trees that will be planted are not just a number to be reached, but real tools for regenerating ecosystems, improving air quality, and strengthening the resilience of European territories. To date, WOWnature has contributed almost 300,000 trees that are growing in Europe. It is the leading Italian initiative in terms of the number of trees adopted in the EU.

The role of European Green Deal in the fight for climate justice and reforestation

The European Green Deal is the EU’s strategic plan to make the continent climate neutral by 2050. The campaign to plant three billion trees by 2030 is part of this broader framework, with the aim of:

– increasing Europe’s forest area;

– reverse biodiversity loss;

– reduce the effects of climate change;

– create economic and social benefits for local communities.

The European Commission has developed the Map-My-Tree platform, which allows citizens and organizations to monitor the number of trees planted and their geographical distribution in real time.

Why planting trees is crucial for Europe’s future

Planting trees means investing in Europe’s future. Every tree helps absorb CO₂, provide habitats for wildlife, reduce soil erosion, and improve the quality of life in urban areas. However, reforestation must be planned using scientific criteria: the EU has established that every new planting must comply with the principles of “the right tree, in the right place, for the right purpose.” This means choosing native species, protecting existing forests, and not replacing valuable ecosystems such as wetlands or stable grasslands.

How to contribute to the goal of three billion trees by 2030

Reaching the goal of three billion trees by 2030 requires everyone to get involved: institutions, local authorities, businesses, and citizens. This is where Etifor, a spin-off of the University of Padua, and its WOWnature initiative come in. Since 2020, WOWnature has been involving companies and communities in reforestation in Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Romania. Every tree adopted and planted with WOWnature officially contributes to the European count. Thanks to a scientific, transparent, and certified approach, WOWnature demonstrates that planting trees in Europe generates environmental, social, and economic benefits.

WOWnature’s strength lies not only in numbers, but also in the way we carry out our reforestation projects. Thanks to an innovative approach, we are able to involve citizens, institutions, and companies in a collective movement towards environmental sustainability. Every tree planted with WOWnature since 2020 represents a step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Our Forestry Project Manager, Chiara Bruni, participated in a conference in Brussels, where she shared our strategies and commitment to reforestation in Europe. WOWnature’s presence in this international arena testifies to the importance of our work and the recognition we have received from the European community.
