San Vigilio di Marebbe

Storm Vaia of 2018 continues to leave a visible mark in the Dolomites, including on the slopes of San Vigilio di Marebbe. This mountain resort, nestled in the breathtaking natural setting of Trentino-Alto Adige, is coping with the storm’s consequential damage, exacerbated by an outbreak of the bark beetle. With rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events weakening trees, the bark beetle has found ideal conditions to proliferate. In fact, this pest feeds on the bark of the most fragile fir trees, often causing their death.

The decline of fir trees alters the landscape and increases the risk of landslides and mudslides, as trees are crucial components in maintaining soil stability. In addition, the loss of these trees threatens biodiversity, compromising the habitat of numerous animal species. In response to this emergency, the San Vigilio Dolomites initiative in collaboration with WOWnature aims to reforest the area, promoting the planting of trees that are more resilient and adapted to changing climatic conditions, thus supporting the resilience and regeneration of the local ecosystem.
