Adopt a tree and protect Marcesina Plain

Italia
• Enego (VI)

Why support this forest?

In October 2018, Storm Vaia struck north-eastern Italy with violent force, causing unprecedented damage. Among the areas most affected was the Marcesina Plain, a vast expanse of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Plateau of the Seven Municipalities), also known as the “Finland of Italy” due to its harsh climate and Nordic landscape.

Enego was the Italian municipality with the largest area damaged by Vaia, with almost 1,000 hectares of forest destroyed. In the following years, the spread of the European spruce bark beetle – an insect that attacks and kills spruce trees – exacerbated the situation, causing the death of thousands of trees that were still standing.

Protect Marcesina Plain

It's not enough to plant new trees; we must protect forests from abandonment, fires, illegal logging, biodiversity loss, wind, and disasters.

If you adopt a tree in this forest, you can plant it in person during WOW events.

You’ll receive an email with the details one month before the event (even if you’ve chosen the Protect this Forest option).

Participate with whoever you like and share your passion for nature! We respect nature’s rhythms, which is why we plant trees in spring and fall, taking environmental conditions into account. If you can’t attend, we’ll take care of planting your tree.

How we are improving the forest

The Marcesina Plain reforestation project involves planting 30,000 new trees starting in spring 2026. They will be arranged in small, irregular clusters to mimic the natural structure of the forest, with a density of approximately 1,500–1,600 plants per hectare.

The species chosen include beech and larch, as well as silver fir, rowan, and birch, all of which are more resistant to climate change than spruce, which proved vulnerable to both the extreme winds of Storm Vaia and the subsequent bark beetle epidemic. The aim is to create a mixed, resilient, and sustainable forest that will once again offer all the ecosystem benefits typical of Alpine forests: protection from instability, soil retention, CO₂ absorption, habitat for biodiversity, and landscape beauty.

The Marcesina Plain is one of the most iconic locations of the Vaia tragedy. However, this disaster can serve as an opportunity for rebirth: transforming the damaged landscape into a laboratory for environmental regeneration and solidarity. Choosing to adopt a tree here means contributing to a tangible, scientifically grounded project with a long-term vision. It is an active, responsible, and visionary gesture, as the new landscape will be the result of collaboration between citizens, institutions, and businesses.
