On the outskirts of Bologna, in San Lazzaro di Savena, a field is set to undergo a transformation. Here, trees, shrubs and hedges will be planted according to the principles of agroforestry – a way of cultivating the land that does not pit production against nature, but allows them to thrive together. The ‘Agroforesta del dono’ aims to breathe new life into a simplified agricultural landscape, enriching biodiversity in an area that lies in close proximity to the city.

How we are improving the forest
The ‘Agroforest of the Gift’ was created to reintroduce trees on an area of around two hectares on the outskirts of the city. Reintroducing trees, shrubs and hedges into a cultivated field makes it possible to continue producing food without clearing the land, whilst at the same time improving the microclimate, the water cycle and soil fertility. The trees coexist with the crops.
In recent years, increasingly hot summers and sudden temperature fluctuations have made working in the fields more difficult, whilst milder winters are no longer able to keep harmful insects and plant diseases at bay. A complex agroforestry system, with carefully planned trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, helps to protect crops by providing shade and retaining water in the soil. The result is a more balanced ecosystem, better able to defend itself against pests and climatic stress.
The project also involves creating green barriers and hedges along the boundaries of the area, designed to trap fine particulate matter and other pollutants, absorb carbon dioxide and moderate summer temperatures. The material obtained from pruning and maintenance will be returned to the soil as mulch, nourishing the earth and retaining moisture.
In total, a network of over 1,200 trees and shrubs will be planted here, comprising green barriers, hedges and agroforestry rows, consisting mainly of native forest species selected by a qualified forester and suited to the environment of the Bologna plain. Each plant will be looked after during its first few years with supplementary watering and individual protection, to give it plenty of time to take root.
Agroforesta del Dono is a project developed in collaboration with Deafal, and will be based at their ‘La Fattoria del Dono’ in San Lazzaro di Savena (BO).
