Adopt a tree and protect Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve

Italia
• Iseo (BS)

Why support this forest?

An oasis of biodiversity where land meets water, designated a “Wetland of International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention due to its wealth of habitats and rare species. In this unique setting on Lake Iseo, the project is restoring the ecosystem of marshes and forests, protecting a priceless natural heritage that has thrived for millennia.

Protect Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve

It's not enough to plant new trees; we must protect forests from abandonment, fires, illegal logging, biodiversity loss, wind, and disasters.

If you adopt a tree in this forest, you can plant it in person during WOW events.

You’ll receive an email with the details one month before the event (even if you’ve chosen the Protect this Forest option).

Participate with whoever you like and share your passion for nature! We respect nature’s rhythms, which is why we plant trees in spring and fall, taking environmental conditions into account. If you can’t attend, we’ll take care of planting your tree.

How we are improving the forest

Located on the southern shore of Lake Iseo, the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve is the most significant wetland in the province of Brescia. It is a precious habitat declared a “wetland of international importance” under the Ramsar Convention. This mosaic of reed beds and bodies of water is protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) within the Natura 2000 network. Here, we work every day to protect biodiversity and restore splendor to a unique territory where nature meets millennial history.

The history of this fascinating place began at the end of the last geological era: as the waters of Lake Iseo receded, they left behind a marshy depression. Over the millennia, abundant vegetation created a thick layer of peat, transforming the area into wet meadows historically used for harvesting marsh grasses. Today, this delicate balance is at the heart of our project. Between 2022 and 2025, we planted more than 4,500 trees and improved the wintering and breeding sites for aquatic birds, amphibians, and reptiles. We have redeveloped various wetlands to restore the flooded marsh habitat and rejuvenate the vegetation.

The project was co-financed by the “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) Call from the Lombardy Region and supported by Fondazione Cariplo. BioClima is an initiative born within the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project, which aims to create public-private financing models to catalyze investment in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.

To ensure the ideal development of the Reserve’s woodlands, the project continues with 950 new native trees and shrubs, essential for expanding the alluvial forest habitat and replacing invasive exotic species. Alongside reforestation, we are working to improve wintering and breeding sites for wildlife by creating a new 700 m² wetland and restoring buried channels to benefit rare species such as the Lataste’s frog and the Great Crested Newt. Every action—from the control of invasive species like the Louisiana crayfish to water management via wells and natural phytodepuration—is designed to strengthen the resilience of the forest and the wetlands.
