Forests created or improved Bassano verde
Why did we support this forest?
Bassano Verde is a network of five new forests created in the heart of the city of Bassano del Grappa to generate benefits for flora, fauna and people’s lives.
History of the forest
Bassano Verde, a widespread urban reforestation project that transforms five areas across the territory into new forests, is launched in Bassano del Grappa. The aim is to bring nature where it is most needed: among homes, schools, parks and city streets. The new trees are selected to improve air quality, reduce the “heat island” effect and increase biodiversity in the city. Bassano Verde is a widespread network, capable of connecting people and nature in the heart of the city.

How we improved the forest
With the project “Bassano Verde” (Green Bassano), we want to bring nature back to the city. The project will transform five public areas into new green spaces, each with its own identity and ecological function. From residential areas to playgrounds, each intervention is designed to improve quality of life, create shade, purify the air and offer new refuges for urban biodiversity.
Two areas — Parco Lucio Battisti and Strada Rivana — are home to Tiny Forests, real miniature forests. In just a few square metres, we will plant dozens of different species of trees and shrubs, very close together, inspired by the method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This technique allows trees to grow faster and create, in just three years, a rich and layered ecosystem like that of a natural forest. Tiny forests are small biodiversity laboratories: they attract butterflies and birds, improve the urban microclimate and offer citizens a place to rediscover the value of nature even in the streets of the city.
The hill of Monte Crocetta is home to a Food Forest, an edible forest where fruit trees, shrubs, flowers and aromatic plants coexist as in a large natural vegetable garden. It is a model of sustainable urban agriculture that combines beauty, food and biodiversity. Over time, it will become a colourful and fragrant place where you can observe the cycle of nature and discover how even in the city it is possible to cultivate a balance between people and the environment.
In Via Monte Ronbon, a small urban forest is being created, designed to evolve over time as a spontaneous ecosystem. Here, trees grow freely, helping to absorb CO₂, improve air quality and provide more shaded and welcoming spaces for those who live in the area.
Finally, in the collina di Monte Crocetta, we are planting a hedge of native shrubs to act as a natural barrier. This green belt will not only protect children and provide shade during the summer days, but will also become a home for small animals, pollinating insects and birds.
All these areas together will form a network of connected green spaces: a mosaic of nature spread throughout Bassano, making it cooler, healthier and more liveable. With Bassano Verde, the municipality and its citizens are investing in the present and future of the city.
