Adopt a tree and protect San Vigilio di Marebbe

Italia
• Marebbe (BZ)

Why support this forest?

The mountains surrounding San Vigilio di Marebbe, in Val Badia, are among the areas most affected by the Vaia storm and the subsequent spread of the bark beetle. Each year, thousands of trees die due to attacks by this small insect, which tunnels under the bark and causes the trees to dry out and die.

This loss is not only about the landscape: healthy forests here are essential for preventing hydrogeological risks, supporting alpine biodiversity, and providing tourism and recreational services. Supporting this project means contributing to the regeneration of Dolomite forests for future generations.

Protect San Vigilio di Marebbe

It's not enough to plant new trees; we must protect forests from abandonment, fires, illegal logging, biodiversity loss, wind, and disasters.

If you adopt a tree in this forest, you can plant it in person during WOW events.

You’ll receive an email with the details one month before the event (even if you’ve chosen the Protect this Forest option).

Participate with whoever you like and share your passion for nature! We respect nature’s rhythms, which is why we plant trees in spring and fall, taking environmental conditions into account. If you can’t attend, we’ll take care of planting your tree.

How we are improving the forest

The intervention takes place in the municipality of San Martino in Badia (Bolzano), a popular tourist area close to the sports and ski facilities of San Vigilio.
After the Vaia storm, many forested areas were severely damaged. Later, a beetle known as the bark beetle attacked mature spruce trees, worsening the situation and leaving entire zones completely devoid of vegetation.

For this reason, the project involves multi-year reforestation efforts with three main goals:

  • gradually restore forest cover;
  • increase the variety of plant and animal species to enhance biodiversity;
  • make the forest more resilient to climate change and future extreme events.

Native species will be planted, including broadleaved trees such as maple, rowan, and birch, to diversify the forest composition and help it better adapt to rising temperatures and insect outbreaks.
