Forests created or improved Microforeste urbane del Savena
Why did we support this forest?
Bringing the forest into the city means creating new spaces for nature right where people live. In San Lazzaro di Savena, three microforests are taking shape: small ecosystems designed to accommodate trees, shrubs and biodiversity, and to become increasingly teeming with life over time. This project brings nature closer to the community and makes the area greener and more biodiverse.
History of the forest
The Savena Microforests stem from the idea of bringing the way a natural woodland functions into the city. A microforest is a small area where many species of trees and shrubs grow close together, creating different layers of vegetation and providing food and shelter for wildlife. To design these new forests, we studied the area’s natural vegetation, selecting the species best suited to the location and capable of encouraging the presence of birds, pollinators and other animals. Three different areas of the municipality will thus become small pockets of nature, destined to grow and evolve over time.
Where is the forest located?
How we improved the forest
In total, around 2,500 young plants belonging to some 30 species of trees and shrubs will be planted, positioned very close together to mimic the natural growth of a woodland. Before planting, we prepare the ground and improve soil conditions. We use mulch and, where necessary, provide emergency watering and carry out maintenance to support the plants during their first few years of growth. Over time, the microforests will become increasingly self-sustaining ecosystems, whilst local residents will be involved in their care through participatory activities.
