Tuscany hills
In the hills of Pisa, a new forest protects water, boosts biodiversity, and restores the landscape.
The Tuscany hills project takes shape in a scenic area of the Pisa province. Here, on former pastures, abandoned farmland, and struggling woodlands, a reforestation initiative is underway to restore balance between nature, water, and the landscape.
The planting of thousands of native trees improves rainwater absorption, reduces soil erosion, and helps stabilize the hillsides. The forest acts like a natural sponge, retaining water and slowing down surface runoff.
One of the most important effects of this intervention concerns the La Fine stream, which flows through the area and into the Arno basin: reforestation improves water quality and reduces flood risk, protecting a watercourse of high ecological value. The Colline Toscane are also meant to be experienced: clear waterfalls, the historic Rocca di Montanino, an ancient black marble quarry, and the Terre di Matilde trails make this area a perfect destination for nature lovers.
The new trees also enrich the forest’s biodiversity: a wide range of local species improves ecosystem health and connectivity, making them more resilient to climate change. The area is already home to abundant wildlife — such as hares, porcupines, wild boars, roe deer, and many bird species — as well as valuable amphibians like the Italian frog, fire salamander, and crested newt.
Adopt a tree here and help regenerate a complex ecosystem where water, forests, and landscape thrive together once again.
Adopt a tree here and come plant it in autumn 2025.
