February 2026 – Updates from Barcelona’s Urban Forest
The project on the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) continues. As part of the latest phase in February 2026, we planted more young trees and shrubs to expand the green space. During this visit, we also inspected the trees and shrubs planted in late 2024 and confirmed that the plants have taken root well and are successfully navigating the delicate early stages of growth.
The Future Campus Forest
Although the plants are still small, the choice of native, heat-tolerant species—such as the holm oak, strawberry tree, and hackberry—is designed with their future growth in mind. This mix of Mediterranean vegetation will grow to recreate the processes of a true natural forest. The long-term goal is to create a shaded oasis for the campus, where local wildlife can find refuge and people can enjoy the space.

November 2024 – Updates from Barcelona’s urban forest
We are on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where we are working on the European Uforest project, co-funded by the European Commission. This project aims to spread knowledge about urban forests and create new green spaces in European cities.
A European project for the future of cities
In the heart of the Autonomous University of Barcelona campus, a new urban forest is taking shape thanks to the European Uforest project. This ambitious project, co-funded by the European Commission, aims to promote knowledge and the practice of urban forests in various European cities, with the goal of combating biodiversity loss and creating spaces that are more resilient to climate change.
A project focused on biodiversity
We are planting 400 plants, including trees and shrubs, all native to the Catalan forest ecosystem. The goal is to recreate a natural habitat that serves as a climate refuge, helping to reduce heat islands and improve air quality. The selected species—such as shrubs and trees that produce berries and fruits—attract pollinating insects and birds, thereby strengthening local biodiversity.
A climate refuge for urban well-being
This urban forest will serve as a key solution to combat typical urban challenges, such as high summer temperatures. By providing natural shade and capturing atmospheric particulate matter, the area will offer an oasis of coolness and enhance the quality of life for students, staff, and campus visitors.
