Why is COP16 important for companies?
COP16, the UN conference on biodiversity, will take place from October 21 to November 1, 2024, in Cali, Colombia. The event aims to reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030. It is essential for companies, as new environmental regulations may be introduced across various sectors. Etifor will participate and present a report on the role of the private sector in biodiversity protection in Italy.
What is COP16 – the International Biodiversity Conference
From October 21 to November 1, in Cali, Colombia, the UN’s COP16 – the International Conference on Biodiversity – will take place. It is the most important event in the world for biodiversity conservation. It is held every two years and brings together countries and representatives from around the world, including governments, scientists, NGOs and the private sector, to discuss and negotiate strategies to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
COP16 will seek to promote the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, approved in 2022 at COP15, during which 196 governments approved the “Global Biodiversity Framework” (GBF): an ambitious plan to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2050.
Why is COP16 important for businesses?
COP16 will be a decisive event for businesses (and not only them), as it will influence the rules and expectations regarding the role of the private sector in protecting biodiversity. Companies increasingly need to assess and reduce their impact on the natural environment, integrating these issues into their operations and reporting on their impact to support global conservation efforts. The conference could introduce new rules or obligations for various sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, fishing, tourism, energy and finance.
Etifor will actively participate in COP16
Etifor | Valuing Nature, an environmental consulting firm and spin-off of the University of Padua, certified as a B Corp, which created the WOWnature initiative, will take an active role at COP16 to promote the transition to a Nature Positive economy.
What will Etifor do during COP16?
1) Will take part in discussions on targets 15 (Integrate legal, administrative or policy measures within business and financial institutions) and 19 (Substantially and progressively increase the level of financial resources) of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
2) Will host a side event “Co-creating a Nature-Positive Economy: From Theory to Practice” on the importance of co-creating a Nature Positive economy, and will take part in multiple meetings on the value of ecosystem services to make private finance compatible with nature. The event will feature a roundtable with sector experts discussing the current state of biodiversity integration in global economies, presenting examples of actions taken by companies in the Global North and South.
3) Will present the report “Biodiversity and the Private Sector in Italy,” produced by Etifor in collaboration with ISPRA, which assesses the progress of GBF targets 15 and 19 at the Italian level.
