Updates from Darndale Donut

Darndale Dublino

December 2023 – Updates from Darndale Donut

In the heart of Darndale Park, on the northern outskirts of Dublin, a new green space has just been created. With the planting of 3,000 native trees, we have officially launched one of the four pillars of the European Uforest project, which is bringing innovative urban forests to Dublin, Milan, Barcelona and Brasov.

Why an urban forest in Darndale?

Urban forests are essential assets for modern cities. The main aim of the project is to improve residents’ quality of life: these trees will act as natural filters against air and noise pollution, reducing the ‘heat island’ effect and lowering temperatures in the neighbourhood. This is a necessary step for a park which, until now, has been almost entirely devoid of proper tree cover.

Biodiversity and accessibility

In addition to its climate benefits, the project aims to create a vital hub of biodiversity for the Dublin area, making the park more welcoming and accessible. The forest has been designed to be open to the local community, offering a space where nature is not merely a landscape feature, but a place to be experienced and enjoyed on a daily basis.

A community-planted forest

The success of the day was marked by an extraordinary turnout: over 300 people rolled up their sleeves, including 200 children accompanied by their parents and teachers. Seeing the local community physically planting the roots of its own future is the strongest sign of the initiative’s success. Special thanks go to Trinity College, Dublin City Council and all the local partners who made this achievement possible.

November 2023 – Updates from Darndale Donut

On 1 December, we will be planting a doughnut-shaped urban forest. The urban forest will be planted within Darndale Park in Dublin. The aim is to provide the community with a green space to spend time together, enjoying nature and learning more about it. To fully embrace this sense of inclusion and unity, the forest will be planted in the shape of a doughnut, with the trees forming the outer ring.

European Urban Forest Week: Darndale Donut Forest in Dublin

Dublin, renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture, is set to add another jewel to its crown: a unique urban forest that will flourish within Darndale Park. The forest is not just about planting trees, but also about fostering a sense of community, strengthening bonds and improving the environment.

Uforest

This European project aims to promote innovation and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of urban forestry. Its overall objective is to accelerate the green transition of cities by leveraging nature-based solutions and sustainable practices.

European Urban Forest Week

As part of European Urban Forest Week, this ambitious project is one of four initiatives launched in four different European cities: Dublin, Milan, Barcelona and Brașov. The week-long event, scheduled for the first week of December, promises a series of initiatives aimed at transforming urban landscapes into thriving green ecosystems.
