October 2026 – Updates from our forest

Five years after the first plantings on the Vezzena Plateau (Levico Terme), we returned to Bosco Pizzotto for our regular field monitoring of the projects started in 2021.

After Storm Vaia in 2018 and the bark beetle outbreak that followed, which devastated the local Norway spruce monocultures, WOWnature stepped in by introducing a diverse mix of native species (beeches, Norway spruces, larches and mountain maples) to restore stability and biodiversity to the area.

Monitoring results five years after planting:

  • Spontaneous natural regeneration: Alongside the planted trees, the forest is regenerating on its own with local shrub species (laburnum, dog rose, barberry) and young silver firs.
  • Successful replanting: The seedlings are alive and responsive; the replacement work carried out in the first two years has taken hold successfully.
  • Resilience to hot summers: In the gullies, where the soil retains more moisture, the trees are growing strongly and already exceed 2 metres in height.
  • A habitat for wildlife: Signs of browsing by deer and roe deer show that the forest has become a living ecosystem again, developing into a varied and resilient natural mosaic.

Regenerating a forest takes a scientific method and continuity over time: this is how we turn fragile areas into forests ready to face the climate of the future.
