November 2023 – Updates from Saja

The tree adoption campaign launched in 2021, and in 2022 we began planting many different species. What has happened since then? The trees are alive and continue to grow, despite a climate that has changed for the worse in recent years: rainfall has decreased and we have experienced extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 47 °C. The chosen species and the ability to irrigate have allowed us to keep all the trees alive.

Saja’s goal is to leave something better behind: to produce food, which is essential because we too are part of this ecosystem, without taking away space, light, and energy from all the other life surrounding us.

The area is located next to the Simeto River, which is in critical condition regarding both water quality and the species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants along its course. With its great biodiversity, Saja also acts as a seed source and a plant bank: species that once grew along the river and have now disappeared due to deforestation, grazing and summer fires continue to survive here, finding a space for themselves and for the wildlife passing through.

“Taking care of a tree is not simply doing it because someone pays you: it is embracing the idea that the tree will save us. I don’t know whether they will manage to save us: the point is to take care of something else, not only for oneself but also for others.” — Salvatore Giaccone, Saja

February 2021 – Updates from Saja

At the foot of Mount Etna, in Paternò (CT), a group of people decided to turn a dream into reality: living and producing in harmony with nature. This is how the Saja project was born, a permanent laboratory for experimenting with permaculture, natural farming, environmental education, art, and self-building.

In this context a food forest is also growing: a forest garden that nourishes both people and biodiversity. With the support of citizens who adopt a tree, we are planting various types of plants at Saja. The WOWnature project at Saja was launched in 2020.

In this video, Salvatore, the owner of the area, explains how to plant an avocado tree.
