Updates from Bosco delle Vigne | April 2025

In the heart of the Berici Hills, amidst vineyards, hedges and old paths, we are pursuing a project that combines nature and tradition. Here, at Bosco delle Vigne, we are recovering an ancient agricultural practice and transforming it into an innovative reforestation tool: the ‘vite maritata’.

The ‘vite maritata’: an agricultural technique from the past to the future

In the heart of the Berici Hills, WOWnature has chosen to rediscover a traditional cultivation practice: the ‘vite maritata’. This technique involves planting the vine next to a taller tree, which acts as a natural support for its growth.

Unlike modern vineyards supported by artificial poles, here the vine climbs native tree species, such as blackthorn, creating a plant ‘marriage’ that enhances the interaction between the plants. After two years, the results are evident: the vines are developing in height by exploiting the tree branches, and the blackthorn has reached a size that supports their natural intertwining.

An ecosystem that builds slowly

Continuous monitoring is essential to understand how the forest evolves and to ensure that the plants planted are properly integrated into the ecosystem. The married vine experiment is not just a tribute to the past, but an ecological choice that reduces environmental impact and promotes a more harmonious management of the landscape.

The Bosco delle Vigne is not just a reforestation project, but a place where a new way of experiencing agriculture and nature is being experimented with, bringing together ancient knowledge and new visions of sustainability.
