UAB Barcelona
Let’s make the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus greener and more resilient to the effects of the climate crisis, such as heat waves and biodiversity loss.
Heat waves are increasingly affecting Europe, especially Mediterranean areas. In particular, cities are more vulnerable to these phenomena due to the already well-known heat island effect. For this reason, Barcelona’s new urban forest was designed as a climate refugia, taking into account specific local conditions. A climate refugia is a green area designed to mitigate the effects of climate change in urban areas, such as excessive heat.
The goal is to make the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus greener and more resistant to the effects of climate crisis, such as heat waves and biodiversity loss. In fact, the species selected for the campus attract pollinators and small birds. This initiative also aims to educate and raise community awareness about the importance of green spaces in the city.
This urban forestation project is part of the Uforest project, funded with support of the European Commission and promoted by Ersaf and Etifor. The Uforest project aims at promoting Europe’s innovation capacity among universities, cities and businesses to deliver a new approach to Urban Forestry. The Barcelona area was developed in collaboration with students from the Uforest Graduate School, as part of the Uforest Innovation Challenge, and is supported by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Agresta.
