Adopt a tree and protect Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino
Why support this forest?
This area, with its reed beds and ponds, is a valuable habitat for many rare species and has been designated as a ‘wetland of international importance’ under the Ramsar Convention, as well as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) within the Natura 2000 network. We are taking steps to safeguard biodiversity and restore this unique area to its former splendour.

Protect Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino
It's not enough to plant new trees; we must protect forests from abandonment, fires, illegal logging, biodiversity loss, wind, and disasters.

If you adopt a tree in this forest, you can plant it in person during WOW events.
You’ll receive an email with the details one month before the event (even if you’ve chosen the Protect this Forest option).
Participate with whoever you like and share your passion for nature! We respect nature’s rhythms, which is why we plant trees in spring and fall, taking environmental conditions into account. If you can’t attend, we’ll take care of planting your tree.
Next event: 27/09/2025
Il prossimo evento di impianto dei nuovi alberi è previsto per il 27 settembre 2025. Vuoi venire a piantare il tuo albero? Adottane uno e riceverai una mail di invito per piantarlo.
How we are improving the forest
Located on the southern shore of Lake Iseo, it is the most significant wetland in terms of size and ecological value in the Brescia province. The Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve comprises reed beds and ponds surrounded by cultivated fields, with occasional houses and buildings. This fascinating site boasts a very long history, which makes it truly unique. Following the emergence of Lake Iseo at the end of the last geological era and the gradual retreat of waters, a marshy depression remained south of Sebino, later named Torbiere.
Over millennia, abundant vegetation developed there, leading to the formation of a thick layer of peat, which slowly replaced the water. This process transformed the area into an expanse of wet meadows, historically used for harvesting grasses to dry and craft into straw chairs.
Today, the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve is recognised as a priority site for biodiversity within the Lombardy Po Valley. It has been declared a “wetland of international importance” under the Ramsar Convention, as well as a SAC and SPA within the Natura 2000 network. These recognitions highlight the range of habitats and aquatic, marsh, and wetland species that are rare or endangered in Italy. Our efforts focus on afforestation and forestry improvements necessary for the optimal growth of the woodland within the reserve. Additionally, we aim to enhance the wintering and breeding habitats for aquatic birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Wetland rehabilitation measures are underway to restore flooded marsh habitats and revitalise the native vegetation.
This project is co-funded by the Lombardy Region’s “Biodiversity and Climate” (BioClima) call for proposals and supported by the Cariplo Foundation. Bioclima is an initiative created within the framework of the Lombardy Plan and the LIFE GESTIRE 2020 project, which aims to create public-private financing models to catalyse investments in biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation projects in Lombardy’s forests and protected areas.
